Once you’ve written a book or ebook, there are several other products you can create very quickly directly from it that will exponentially increase your profits with very little work. And most authors overlook one or more of them so here they are: audios, special reports, ecourses, video-coaching programs, and high-end coaching programs.

The easiest thing to do after you’ve written your book or ebook, is to record it. It only takes as long as it takes to read it. Then, you’ll want to edit it. And, if you want to, you can find royalty-free music and add music to your intro and outro or have someone do it for you. You’ll also need a CD cover if you want to deliver it as a physical product, and a 3D graphic representation of it for both a CD and/or download. (You can find them at www.fiverr.com for $5 each if you’re short on cash.)

Next, you can create special reports. These can be free or low-cost reports that are used as lead generators to create interest in your book or ebook. What I suggest doing is, looking through your completed manuscript for a whole section that can stand alone. If you find one but you think it has too much good information in it, then you can remove some of it. All, it takes is copying the section into a new word document, creating a new, eye-popping title, and having a cover created and it’s ready to go!

Or, you can take the idea from a section and rewrite it, if you don’t want it to be the exact text as in your book or ebook. These can be created in a couple of hours since you already have all the information you need to do it.

Another great way to create a new product from your book or ebook is to turn it into an ecourse. You can chunk it into lessons, in which case, you would charge for it. Or, you can chunk it into lessons and remove some of the details and give it for free as a lead generator. (Or, give part of it in lessons as a lead generator.) It shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours to remove the text you want to take out and upload it into an auto responder sequence or hire someone to do it for you-which is what I recommend you do.

You can also up sell people from your book or ebook to an ecourse, in which case you should add additional information to the ecourse version. And again. This shouldn’t take more than a few hours to complete.

You can also take your chapters and turn them into a video-coaching program. You can either talk each lesson into a webcam or video recorder. (Be sure to use a teleprompter, so you don’t look like you’re reading it.) Or, you can use PowerPoints, in which case you just add them to the audio that you’ve hopefully already created. Or, again, hire someone to do it for you! You can also add music and/or graphics to your presentation.

And my favorite-turn your book or ebook into a high-end coaching program. It’s actually already done! You just have to recognize it. It’s there in your Table of Contents! And it can sell from $997 to $2500 for group coaching and $2,000 to $5,000 or more for individual coaching-as long as it’s a “How-to”

Turn each chapter into a module or lesson. Add an action plan at the end of each one and a study guide with an answer sheet and you’re in business!

Each book or ebook you write can be turned into a whole funnel of products for your business with very little effort. So, make it easy on yourself, and create several from every ebook or book your write! You’ll work less, make a lot more, and get your message out to a lot more people!

To understand why this is inevitable, consider the past few years. The historically staid and technology-averse publishing ecosystem has been ripped apart and transformed.

Take the first seven months of 2010 alone: In April, Apple came out with the iPad and quickly sold over three million units. Apple also launched its own proprietary bookstore, iBooks. In June, Barnes & Noble lowered the price of …

Now let’s rethink the reading/viewing/consuming experience. There are new tools coming that will allow you to put your book into a platform that creates a rich interactive experience.. so reader can pause and go deeper into an area, and for those of us who market, maybe BUY SOMETHING.

Here’s one I’m loving. Qwiki Now in Alpha, meaning that you may have to wait to use. In the meantime, watch this short demonstration and an imagine how readers will interact with your work

I am trying out a new webinar system for my private coaching sessions. So you get this same ME, hopefully a great show, and the fun of watching me bumble through with new technology (OK.. you can get that anytime)

The only catch.. I’m just doing this ONCE.. it will NOT BE RECORDED (no evidence if I screw up) and it is on SHORT NOTICE.

Friday at Noon Eastern (9am Pacific) on July 16th (yes, that is tomorrow.. I did say SHORT NOTICE)

I may talk about Twitter if you twist my arm.

I will answer ANY question… show any secret site.

You can still ask your question in a comment, on Twitter or whatever.. but you won’t get the real live me with a mouse in my hand showing you exactly what YOU need to succeed unless you register here

Guest Post by Lee Pound
Lee will be our guest on Profitable Social Media radio on April 9th. Details on the Profitable Social Media show page

Over 500,000 books are published every year. Yet most of them will never be read by anybody. Instead they sit in the author’s garage or sit for a few weeks in a bookstore and then get destroyed.

Yes, as an author your job is to write your book. However, your job is also to get your book into the hands of your readers. Your job is also to give them a product they will want to read.

Most books fail because the author did a poor job of writing, designing and marketing. I’ve distilled these down into the seven biggest mistakes that cause this to happen.

Writing:

Copying someone else’s material. This is called research. However, when you don’t talk about your own experiences with this material, you will bore your reader.

No stories. Stories give a book its emotional content. They help the author sell his or her ideas by putting those ideas into a believable context.

No call to action. The author must tell the reader what to do with the material he or she has presented.

Poor spelling and grammar. This happens with the author does not make the investment to have the book edited by a professional.

Design:

Bad cover design. If the cover is poorly designed, if it is full of clip art and weird type styles, it will look unprofessional and turn potential readers away.

Bad interior design. If your interior book design is inconsistent, you will again look unprofessional.

Marketing:

Waiting for someone else to market your book. First of all, your book is a marketing tool for your business. It represents you to your potential customers. This is true whether you are writing non-fiction or fiction. Your job is to get your book into the hands of your readers. You must speak, write, sign books, write blogs, send emails, and send out press releases since nobody else will do it for you.

Writing a book is a powerful way to establish yourself as an expert in your market. You are taking months to create your book. Take the time to make it professional before you publish it.

I just received an email from Apple announcing that I could buy an iPad now for delivery next month.

What’s odd about this?

Apple doesn’t spam me. I get receipts from iTunes and an occasional holiday reminder that an iPod makes a great holiday gift. While I’m sure they have many lists for various customer bases, as a light user of Apple products, this is the first time I’ve received a pre-release advertisement to buy an Apple Product.

So much hype over an evolutionary step forward.. the technology is just a larger screen iPod/iPhone with many limitations compare to tablet computer and similar sized laptops… I think this is one more signal that the smart guys are planning for another upturn in the move to ubiquitous devices everywhere.

When you get used to carrying whatever devices add value to your life, there is less and less room for a book in your bag.. especially when the reading experience becomes better than reading ink on paper.

We’ve been dying to know more about Microsoft’s Courier tablet / e-book device ever since we first caught wind of it last September, and while our entreaties to Mr. Ballmer went unanswered, we just learned some very interesting information from an extremely trusted source. We’re told Courier will function as a "digital journal," and it’s designed to be seriously portable: it’s under an inch thick, weighs a little over a pound, and isn’t much bigger than a 5×7 photo when closed. That’s a lot smaller than we expected — this new picture really puts it into perspective — and the internals apparently reflect that emphasis on mobility: rather than Windows 7, we’re told the Courier is built on Tegra 2 and runs on the same OS as the Zune HD, Pink, and Windows Mobile 7 Series, which we’re taking to mean Windows CE 6.

More than a decade ago, while working in the computer hardware industry, I saw some data on the trajectory of screen resolution and capacities for the future.

Many pundits were saying that screens as good as paper were coming very soon, but one smart futurist showed us a graph of memory and processor capacities, the number of pixels and resolutions of display materials and just what it would take to have screens that weren’t a strain on eyes and cheap enough to be ubiquitously available.

The DATE for his chart where all of this came together was 2010.

Recent announcement of Apple’s iPad, improvements in Amazon Kindle devices and a multitude of other readers confirm what we’ve known is coming… That feeling that books are a better way to read is going to start fading away.

You may be like the hundreds of authors and readers I’ve talked to over the past decade who claim that they will never enjoy reading on a computer as much as holding a book. Culturally, that makes sense. We’ve had decades of lousy screens and centuries of wonderful books.

Book aren’t going away anytime soon. However, every author should get ready for a much more rapid growth in eBook and alternative electronic distribution.

We’ve been advising clients to get an eBook reader, try out the technologies.. see where the clash among format, digital rights management, hardware vendors and publisher is moving. Feel for yourself where the market is going.

One of the last big hurdles has been the complaint that you don’t get to own a hard cover book when you purchase an eBook.. and must rely on the storage system that too often breaks down.

That’s changing too.

Watch what Calibre Ebook Management Software has to offer.

I suggest downloading a copy to manage all those downloads you can’t find on your hard drive. You may still not ever read them, but just watching this video, I could see real progress from the tools I was using just a few years back.

Apple got us all using MP3 when they got the iPod right.. Maybe they will do this for books.. maybe not.

What do you think?

Reading more on the Amazon/Macmillin dispute and the old school bullying tactics both are using in the fight.

I’ve stated in previous posts my position.. I think the consumer (readers) will ultimately control what price we can sell a book for.

Amazon is letting the market decide.

Dear Customers:

Macmillan, one of the “big six” publishers, has clearly communicated to us that, regardless of our viewpoint, they are committed to switching to an agency model and charging $12.99 to $14.99 for e-book versions of bestsellers and most hardcover releases.

We have expressed our strong disagreement and the seriousness of our disagreement by temporarily ceasing the sale of all Macmillan titles. We want you to know that ultimately, however, we will have to capitulate and accept Macmillan’s terms because Macmillan has a monopoly over their own titles, and we will want to offer them to you even at prices we believe are needlessly high for e-books. Amazon customers will at that point decide for themselves whether they believe it’s reasonable to pay $14.99 for a bestselling e-book. We don’t believe that all of the major publishers will take the same route as Macmillan. And we know for sure that many independent presses and self-published authors will see this as an opportunity to provide attractively priced e-books as an alternative.

Kindle is a business for Amazon, and it is also a mission. We never expected it to be easy!

Thank you for being a customer

What do you think?

Amazon conceded defeat Sunday evening after halting sales of all books published by Macmillan in a dispute over higher e-book prices. Having made the $9.99 e-book a fixture, Amazon now faces the prospect of raising its prices to match new terms Apple is offering publishers.

This is not over folks. We’re going to see a continued power play from the old school publishers as the Amazon Kindle, Apple iPad and others take over the market.

As we discussed here, the winner will be the player that controls distribution. Will that be the traditional publishers?

I caught a discussion among some writers about titles missing from Kindle when a publisher doesn’t like Amazon’s pricing.

Some suggested that Amazon better be careful now that Apple has announce the iPad.. the giant iPod touch the will be out soon… claiming “the timing couldn’t be worse for Amazon”

The timing couldn’t be better.

Amazon, Apple, or somebody is going to discover new ways of getting books to people. Whoever does will win the ebook distribution war.

The Apple iPod was not the first mp3 player.. Jobs was the first to take on the music publishers and win. The “game changer” is not the pretty new hardware.. it will be the distribution deals that give consumers what they want.

Imagine a future where the quantity of books sold without killing a tree equals the number of ringtones purchased. Sure, there would be some low prices, some piracy, some

I can’t say where things will end.. but it’s clear that we won’t be going back to publishing of yesterday. That’s gone for good.
